Landmark moments in European park history
Steam-powered carousels reach their ornate peak
By the mid-1890s, fairground carousel builders across Europe — particularly in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands — had developed richly decorated platform gallopers powered by steam engines with mechanical barrel organs. These machines represent the apex of Victorian fairground engineering and remain among the most technically complex historic rides still in operation at European parks.
Historic carousels →Tivoli's wooden scenic railway opens in Copenhagen
The Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, opened in 1914 and continues to operate today. Built as a scenic railway — a format in which a ride operator controls braking manually during the descent — it represents a category of wooden coaster that has largely disappeared from European parks, making surviving examples rare heritage items.
Vintage wooden coasters →Bakken's Rutschebanen inaugurated near Copenhagen
The Rutschebanen at Dyrehavsbakken — a park that predates Tivoli and is considered one of the world's oldest operating amusement parks — opened its wooden roller coaster in 1932. Like its Tivoli counterpart, it uses a manually braked scenic railway format, and remains operational as of the current season.
Vintage wooden coasters →Efteling's Stoomcarrousel installed in the Netherlands
The Stoomcarrousel at Efteling in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands, was acquired by the park in 1952 and entered regular operation in 1956. Dating to approximately 1903 in its construction, the carousel — originally steam-powered and still accompanied by its non-operational steam engine — is one of a small number of surviving salon carousels of its type in Europe.
